Reflection Task 2 - Digital Media
DIGITAL MEDIA
Digital media has become an essential part of our lives in the modern area, and it has changed the way we interact with each other and how we consume information. Digital media can be defined as any content that is created, stored, and distributed electronically. This can include everything from social media platforms to streaming service, and it is constantly evolving. In today’s digital age, digital media has become and integral part of our lives, providing us with instant access to information, entertainment, and communication. With the rise of smartphones, tablets, and other devices, we have become reliant on digital media than ever before. Digital media is an essential part of our lives and it has changed the way we interact with each other, consume information, and entertain ourselves. However, we must also be aware of the potential risks and take steps to protect ourselves.
Videos
As technology
continues to evolve, the use of digital media in the classroom has become
increasingly prevalent. Among the various forms of digital media, videos have
become a popular tool for educators to enhance their teaching methods. Videos
can provide visual aids to help students better understand complex concepts,
which can be especially helpful for those who are visual learners. There are several
platforms that can be used in the classroom such as YouTube and ted talks as
well as platforms that allw students to make their own videos for assignments such
as windows movie maker and loom.
Videos can also
help to enhance students’ critical thinking skills. When watching a video,
students can be prompted to analyse what they are seeing and draw conclusions
based on what they have learned. Furthermore videos can be used to spark discussions
and debates among students, which can help deepen their understanding of the
topic at hand. An example of this was on my first placement teaching a year 9
food technology class. The subject they were covering was food and fibre, a
component of the lesson was pasta. By using the below video as part of the
learning, the video showed how pasta was made in commercial quantities and this
allowed discussions to occur with the students listing the different types of
pasta. This video then further discussed the pasta types and how the shapes
were used in cooking and the sauces that are to be paired with them, this
allowed them to understand the concepts and how they intertwined with the
subject.

Digital Images
Digital images
have become an essential form of digital media in the classroom. With the
widespread use of technology, images are being used in educational materials to
enhance learning and provide a better understanding of complex concepts. An
advantage of using digital images in learning is that they can help students to
remembers and understand these complex concepts and ideas more easily. For
instance, images can be used to demonstrate scientific processes, show historical
events, or help visualise mathematical equations.
Digital images can also be used to accommodate
different learning styles. For instance, visual learners can benefit from
images that complement text or audio material. Furthermore, learners with
disabilities or special needs can benefit from digital images that provide
alternative ways of accessing and understanding material.
SAMR and Legal/Ethical/Safe Protocols
When it comes to
using videos and digital images in the classroom, the SAMR model can be a useful
tool to ensure that technology is being used effectively to enhance learning experiences.
At the substitution level, videos and digital images can simply replace
traditional materials, such as textbooks or printed images. Augmentation
involves adding traditional elements, such as captions or interactive features,
to enhance learning experience. Modification involves using videos and images
to facilitate activities that were previously impossible or difficult without
technology, such as creating multimedia projects. Finally, at the redefinition
level, videos and images can be used to transform the learning experience, such
as using virtual and augmented reality to simulate real-world experiences.
In today’s digital
age, videos and digital images have become a ubiquitous part of classroom
instruction. However, it is important to follow safe, legal, and ethical protocols
when using them in educational settings. Firstly, obtain consent from students
and parents before using their images or images for educational purposes.
Secondly, ensure that any images or videos used are appropriate for the
intended audience and do not contain sensitive or offensive content. Thirdly,
respect copyright laws by obtaining permission or using only royalty-free content. Finally,
ensure that ant personal information or images of students are stored securely
and not shared outside the classroom. By following these protocols, educators
can provide a safe and respectful learning environment for all students.
