Reflection Task 3 - Presentations
PRESENTATIONS
Presentations are
a common tool used by teachers in the classroom. These visual aids help to
convey information to students in a clear and concise manner, making it easier
for them to understand complex topics. Presentations also help to keep students
engaged and focused during lessons. Here are some ways in which presentations
are used by teachers in the classroom:
·
Introducing
new topics
·
Reinforcing
key concepts
·
Encouraging
class participation
·
Providing
feedback
·
Interactive
learning
·
Demonstration
of new processes
Microsoft PowerPoint
is widely used program in the classroom, but there are so many more programs
that are available to us to use in the classroom. During my time in the Defence
Force and undertaking this degree I have always reverted to PowerPoint as I am comfortable
and know how to use the features. But for this blog I have chosen to have a
play with Prezi as I have only created one presentation and would like to no
more.
Prezi is a cloud-based
presentation software that allows user to create visually engaging and dynamic presentations.
It is an alternative to traditional slide-based presentation software like PowerPoint.
Prezi uses a ‘zoomable canvas’ approach that allows users to pan and zoom in
and out of their presentation, creating a more interactive and engaging experience
for the audience. It offers a wide range of templates and themes, as well as
various multimedia features and video embedding, 3D animations and charts.
Prezi allows users
to select from several quick start option like a banner, presentation, posters,
or reports. There are options to create your own project, video or presentation
that allows you to create your own template rather than using a quick start one.
Once you have chosen your project, you can pick a certain category and scroll
through the number of templates on offer that suits your project.
Once you have
chosen your template and design, Prezi allows the user to change several
aspects of the template like backgrounds, images and even the style. There are several
images available to select to suit your project and you can change fonts and
font sizes. Prezi has several slides that allow you to zoom in and out where you
can alter the wording to suit your project or add more information. This allows
the template to be more interactive rather than switching from one slide to the
next.
As part of a
previous subject assessment, I was required to create a presentation that discussed
cross curriculum priorities. I am hoping that my limited knowledge in
technology allows visitors to open the link and see the presentation as it
should be enjoyed.
Prezi is a great
staring platform to allow teachers and students sign up for a free account to
start using. But for more user-friendly settings you can sign up monthly where
the users have access to more features than the free trial. When I was creating
my presentation, it was easy to spend so much time trying to perfect it and
make it look the way I want, but having the access to templates allows users to
create presentations that are appealing and engage the learners rather than
using traditional software programs like PowerPoint.
Legal/Safe/Ethical Protocols
Presentations are
a common tool for eductors to engage and communicate with students. However, it
is important to adhere to legal, safe, and ethical protocols when using
presentations as a teaching aid. Firstly, it is crucial to ensure that all
materials used in the presentation are not in violation of any copyright laws.
This means seeking permission or using materials that are in the public domain.
Secondly, it is vital to maintain a safe environment during the presentation.
This includes using appropriate language and avoiding any content that could be
considered offensive or discriminatory. Educators should also be mindful of
potential triggers for students and handle sensitive topics with care. Lastly,
ethical considerations should be considered when creating and delivering
presentation. This included being truthful and accurate in the information
presented, avoiding bias, and promoting diversity.
SAMR Model
Presentations can
be utilized at different levels of the SAMR model to enhance teaching and learning.
At the substitution level, presentations can be used as a simple replacement
for traditional classroom lectures or whiteboard drawings. For example, teachers
can use tools like PowerPoint, Google Slides or Prezi to present the
information to students. At the augmentation level, presentations can be
enhanced with interactive elements such as videos, hyperlinks, and images. This
can increase student engagement and allow for a more dynamic and personalised learning
experience. At the modification level, presentations can be used to facilitate
collaborative and creative activities. For instance, students can work together
to create multimedia presentations that showcase their learning in a unique and
engaging way. Finally at the redefinition level, presentations can be used to
transform traditional classroom activities and assessments. Students
can use technology tools to create interactive and multimedia-rich
presentations that demonstrate their mastery of a subject in a way that was not
previously possible.

Hey Michael, thanks for sharing your insight of using presentations within the classroom. As someone who has not yet used Prezi, I found the information and instructions very clear and informative. I also enjoyed looking at the Prezi presentation you created on Cross Curriculum Priorities, and I can definitely see the positive in using Prezi over PowerPoint with the additional design features. Whilst I was on placement last year, I was surprised to see that neither of my supervising teacher used presentations within their classroom. This has meant that I have yet to experience using one as a teaching aid. Have you been able to use one, and if so, what was your experience in student engagement?
ReplyDeleteThanks again for sharing your insight and all the best with the remainder of the course.
